Experimenting with progressions

It takes two chords to make a progression

Take the step up to two chords and there’s still a lot you can do. Here are some well-known examples:

Spoonful by Cream – I and bIII (flattened mediant) (which would be E and G chords in the key of E major)
Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen – I and IV (B and E in the key of E major)
You Never Can Tell (C’est la Vie) by Chuck Berry – I and V7 (G and D7 in the key of G major)
Horse with No Name by America – i and VII6 (Em and D6)

I produced this quick sketch just to demonstrate rocking backwards and forwards between two chords – in this case, i7 and iv7 (Am7 and Dm7 in the key of A minor). You could put all sorts of stuff on top and develop from there in any number of directions.
