Experimenting with rhythm

A nod to waltz time

It’s odd to think of 3/4 time (that’s three crotchets/quarter beats in each bar/measure) as anything but conventional; after all, people have been waltzing for some 500 years. And 3/4 time featured regularly in pop and rock music in the mid 20th Century (think Paul Simon’s Still Crazy After All These Years, Jimi Hendrix’s Manic Depression, Wings’ Mull of Kintyre or The Stranglers’ Golden Brown). You just don’t get much of it now.

Here’s a simple interpretation of 3/4 time, with the snare hitting the 2nd and 3rd beats:

So, while, 3/4 isn’t going to take you into new territory, I think we should acknowledge it here. More by accident than judgement, two of my pieces in the Instrummers section of this site happen to be in 3/4:
